Libya: A Land of Ancient History and Modern Challenges

In 2025, we will highlight and pray for the countries where we work with media teams. To start the year off we are praying for Libya.

Libya, is a country in North African. With a long and complex history, Libya has been a crossroads of civilizations for thousands of years, thanks to its strategic position along the Mediterranean coast. From the ancient Greeks and Romans to the Ottoman Empire and Italian colonisation, the country has been shaped by a diverse range of cultural and historical influences, leaving a lasting impact on its identity and heritage.

Libya’s long-standing political instability and security challenges have had a profound impact on the growth of Christianity, particularly among indigenous Libyans. Many Christians have been forced to flee the country, while those who remain often face discrimination and persecution, making the practice of their faith increasingly difficult.

A Glimpse into Libyan Culture

  • Language and Dialects: Arabic is the official language of Libya, with Libyan Arabic being the most widely spoken dialect. However, several Amazigh (Berber) languages are still spoken, particularly in regions such as the Nafusa Mountains, Ghadames, and parts of the south.
  • Cuisine: Libyan cuisine is influenced by North African, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern traditions. Staples include couscous, grilled meats, and stews, while dishes such as bazeen (a dough-based dish), asida (a sweet porridge), and shorba (spiced soup) are popular. Tea culture is also significant, with strong, sweetened tea often served in multiple rounds.
  • Traditions: Hospitality is a deeply ingrained aspect of Libyan culture, with guests traditionally welcomed with tea, dates and nuts. Music and dance play an important role in cultural celebrations, alongside oral storytelling and poetry, which have been passed down for generations.

The Libyan Audio Bible Translation Project: a Call2Prayer

Translating the Bible into the Western Libyan dialect is a vital step in making God’s Word accessible to the local population as it’s never been done before. However, this effort faces several significant challenges, including:

  • Security concerns: Ongoing conflict and instability in Libya pose serious risks to translators and those involved in Bible translation efforts.
  • Linguistic complexities: Accurately translating the Bible into Libya’s diverse dialects requires deep linguistic expertise and cultural sensitivity to ensure clarity and authenticity.
  • Limited resources: A shortage of skilled personnel and funding often slows the progress of Bible translation projects, making it difficult to sustain long-term efforts.

Our translation team consists of four Christians who are from Libya. Two members have extensive theological training, while the other two play a key role in overseeing the rigorous revision process and ensuring community feedback is integrated throughout the translation work.

Prayer Requests:

  • Pray for the safety and protection of all team members involved in the Bible translation project from Libya.
  • Pray for wisdom and guidance for the translators as they navigate the complexities of Libyan languages.
  • Pray for the provision of resources, including financial support and skilled personnel, to sustain the ongoing translation efforts.
  • Pray for the removal of barriers that hinder the free flow of God’s Word across Libya.
  • Pray for the spiritual growth and encouragement of the Christian community in Libya.

Your prayers will play a vital role in supporting Bible translation efforts and helping to bring the life-changing message of Jesus Christ to the people of this ancient land – thank you.

New Media Teams – united by their love of Jesus

Due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, two established media teams have been forced to re-locate to a North Africa country, where MEM’s teams are based. Despite awful circumstances, this is a great opportunity to serve the Sudanese community.
