In our eleventh episode of the podcast, we introduce our new mini-series exploring the importance and impact of storytelling, particularly in our work reaching people through media. James and Jess share stories that have impacted them the most, and reflect on the successes of MEM Week this year.
Episode One: Why is media such a vital tool for reaching people with the love of God? James and Jess do introductions and dive into the importance of media for mission.
Episode Two: James and Jess talk about how the concept of discipleship differs in the Middle East compared to in churches in the West. Also covered in this episode: reframing negative options about the Middle East region, and the complicated world of social media.
Episode Three: In this episode, we welcome film director Ramy, whose work is being used to combat the issue of human trafficking and child brides in North Africa. Although a very challenging topic, hear about how the medium of film can be used to bring hope to such dark situations. WARNING: the themes discussed in this episode some may find distressing.
Episode Four: International causes or local causes? Jess’ tricky question raises an interesting discussion on a difficulty many international ministries face when trying to gain support. We reflect back on our first ever MEM Week, and interview Rachel, who decided to spend 26 hours raising money for MEM dressed in a very unusual costume…
Episode Five: Media ministry can be a controversial topic in the West. James and Jess discuss why the strategic use of media is increasingly vital for churches, and how we should best approach and make use of it, both as individual Christians and as congregations.
Episode Six: Churches in the UK are slowly getting back to pre-pandemic functioning, but we still find ourselves in a world which seems devoid of hope. In this episode, we discuss five ways that churches can be a beacon of hope in the world today, and introduce our exciting new Church Campaign!
Episode Seven: In this episode, we discuss the importance of using joy and lament in creativity and media, the strong culture of poetry and creativity within Middle Eastern culture, and the biblical relevance of this. James and Jess also ask whether media and the internet can replace meaningful community.
Episode Eight: In this festive special, we talk about all things Christmas, but also share Naomi’s story and talk about a vital ministry in the Gulf region. We share what it’s like for women living quite isolated lives and how they can be reached with the Gospel through social media.
Episode Nine: In this episode, we discuss whether we should accept who we are or look to improve ourselves – something very topical in our increasingly individualistic age. We also look ahead at 2022, and talk about how Middle Eastern perspectives on food, family, and football can actually make your year even better.
Episode Ten: What role does media have to play in bringing sustainable change to the Middle East and the rest of the world? James and Jess discuss this topic in light of MEM’s future ministry, and celebrate making it to our 10th episode! They also tackle the tricky question: is social media a good place to have a balanced discussion?
